Serenity at Sea: A Prayerful Journey
Experiencing Divine Connection Amidst the Majesty of Nature
For the first time in my life, I found myself on a cruise ship, surrounded by the vastness of the open ocean. I had never before experienced such an extraordinary setting, and I did not know what to expect. When morning came, I stepped onto the balcony of our stateroom, stunned and uncertain about this new experience. Little did I know that the next few moments would become a deeply spiritual encounter with the Divine, enveloped by the beauty of creation.
The air was crisp and filled with the gentle sound of waves against the hull of the ship. I unrolled my blue and purple striped tallit and wrapped it around my shoulders, feeling its comforting weight. The fabric, adorned with stripes that mirrored the colors of the dawning sky, kept me warm against the cool morning breeze. I felt its familiar hug, grounding me as I began my prayers.
As I wrapped the tefillin straps around my arm, the leather cool against my skin, I felt a profound sense of continuity. The ancient ritual, unchanged for generations, now took on new meaning against the backdrop of the endless sea. I placed the tefillin on my forehead and over my heart, connecting my thoughts and emotions to God. The breeze played with the straps as if nature itself was participating in my prayer.
I began the Shema, my voice mingling with the soft murmur of the ocean. שמע ישראל ה׳ אלוקינו ה׳ אחד, "Hear, O Israel: the Lord our God, the Lord is One" (Deuteronomy 6:4). The words felt particularly powerful, resonating with the infinite expanse before me. It was as if the vastness of the sea and sky echoed my declaration, affirming the unity and omnipresence of the Creator. The Psalmist writes, ממזרח־שמש עד־מבואו מהלל שם ה׳, "From the rising of the sun to its setting, the name of the Lord is to be praised" (Psalm 113:3). I felt alive with the universe and alone in God’s presence at that moment.
As I continued with the blessings, I could not help but marvel at the natural splendor around me. The towering and majestic fjords rose from the water like ancient sentinels. The sight reminded me of the Psalmist's words: השמים מספרים כבוד־אל ומעשׂה ידיו מגיד הרקיע, "The heavens declare the glory of God, the sky proclaims His handiwork" (Psalms 19:2). Every element of the scene seemed to sing of God's grandeur.
Reaching the Amidah, I stood in silent prayer, feeling a deep stillness within me. The rabbinic teaching embossed into the cover of my prayer book, דע לפני מי אתה עומד, "Know before Whom you stand” (Midrash), echoed in my mind. Here, before the vast ocean and towering fjords, I felt a profound sense of standing in the presence of the Divine. Each prayer was a step closer, each breath a connection to something greater than myself.
Here, before the vast ocean and towering fjords, I felt a profound sense of standing in the presence of the Divine.
Time slipped away unnoticed, the world around me holding its breath in sacred silence. I felt an incredible peace, a sense of being profoundly connected to everything and nothing all at once. My prayers were not just words but expressions of gratitude, of wonder, of a deep yearning for understanding and connection. As the sun began its ascent, painting the sky in hues of orange and pink, the ship entered a new realm of beauty. The vast, open sea gave way to stunning natural formations, fjords rising majestically from the water, their steep cliffs adorned with lush greenery. The sheer scale of these formations was breathtaking, each fjord like a towering guardian of ancient secrets.
In the distance, a glacier gleamed with an ethereal light, its cold brilliance reflecting the rising sun. The glacier stood as a testament to time's slow passage and the enduring nature of faith. The cool breeze, now brushing against the tefillin straps on my arm, felt like a gentle caress from the Creator, a reminder of God's closeness.
As I concluded my prayers, the sun began to rise fully, casting a golden glow upon the water and the ice. The fjords transformed in the light, becoming pillars of gold and shadow. I felt an overwhelming sense of gratitude and peace. Isaiah's words came to mind: כי־בשׂמחה תצאו ובשלום תובלון ההרים והגבעות יפצחו לפניכם רנה וכל־עצי השׂדה ימחאו־כף, "For you shall go out with joy, and be led forth with peace: the mountains and the hills shall break forth before you into singing, and all the trees of the field shall clap their hands" (Isaiah 55:12).
That morning, on the balcony of the cruise ship, surrounded by the vast ocean, fjords, and glaciers, I experienced a connection to the Divine unlike any I had felt before. My first time praying Shacharit in the open waters was a moment of profound beauty and spiritual fulfillment. As I removed my tefillin and folded my tallit, I knew that I had to hold onto this experience to keep it with me, a cherished memory of when the divine and the natural world came together in a sacred dance.
